Piano events

14 May, 2010

This Sunday two classical piano events will resound in the splendid Oak Room. Enjoy listening to emerging young talent in the exciting Sheepdrove Piano Competition Final at 2.00pm and then in the evening, a recital by Russian pianist Mikhail Kazakevich begins at 7.30pm.

Both of these events are part of the Newbury Spring Festival.

The Sheepdrove Piano Competition Final

This important competition, funded by the Sheepdrove Trust, was launched in 2009 and attracted pianists of an extremely high standard from all over the world. Students from all the major UK music colleges are invited to apply.

Once again there will be an emphasis on the music of Chopin, whose 200th Anniversary is being celebrated this year.

You will be able to cast your vote for the Audience Prize. The competition winner will also perform a solo recital at 12.30pm in the Corn Exchange on Monday 17 May as part of the Festival’s established Young Artists Lunchtime Recital Series.

2.30pm (ends approx 5.30pm)

£16.50* Unreserved seating. Includes afternoon tea.

Mickhail Kazakevich

Following the afternoon’s Piano Competition Final, the Festival is delighted to present a recital by one of the judges, the distinguished Russian pianist Mikhail Kazakevich. His programme begins with Tchaikovsky’s ‘The Seasons’, twelve separate pieces written to reflect each month of the year. This is followed by two major works by Chopin, continuing the Festival’s celebration of the composer’s 200th anniversary.

Russian born Mikhail Kazakevich’s sensational western debut at the International Schubert Competition in Dortmund in 1991 launched his international career and he has gone on to give numerous solo recitals and perform with many leading orchestras. Mikhail also combines his intense concert activity with teaching, mainly at London’s Trinity College of Music, where he is professor of piano.

7.30pm (ends approx 9.30pm)

*Special combined ticket price to attend both these events £25. A delicious 2 course seasonal organic supper will be available at 6pm. £17.50. (Please pre book when ordering your tickets.
