FMD debate by video

The latest on FMD 2007:

Defra’s latest epidemiological report (PDF link here) led them to relax some more of the movement restrictions. Farmers can now move animals around their farm. Their report says there’s very little chance that modelling will spread by air from “the ultimate source” Pirbright; we think they mean FMD! (paragraph 50). Will we ever know how it happened? Virus samples are being gene-sequenced to help pinpoint their exact origin.

But let’s stop jumping up and down about this year’s source. Remember that FMD can return at any time, and it must never again be the trigger for millions of bolt-gun deaths for innocent animals who have not even got the disease. That’s what happened in 2001 for 6.5 million farm animals. And it could happen again.

Let’s join the other countries who successfully vaccinate to control FMD. Interestingly the history behind Britain’s reluctance to develop vaccine started in the early 20th century. Let’s step into the 21st century and vaccinate! It’s the ethical way forward.
